Our goal is not to justify the clinical use of homeopathic medicines but to present evidence that substances prepared according to the homeopathic method can influence the immune system. This can be an important step towards a reevaluation of homeopathy as a field of value for basic and clinical research. To do this, in 2004, our laboratory began research with unique highly diluted homeopathic substances, which, according to previously consulted homeopathic physicians, are indicated in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Therefore, they could influence macrophages, the study model of our laboratory. And the answers obtained, positive or negative, would be of interest also clinical, because the macrophages intercommunicate between the innate and adaptive response of the immune system. In this work, which resulted in a master’s dissertation and a doctoral thesis, we tested 7 products in different potencies: Aconitum nappelus, Arsenicum album, Atropa belladonna, Bryonia alba, Lachesis muta, Mercurius solubilis and Thuya occidentalis. All these substances have altered not only the effector functions of macrophages but also precursors of different cells of the immune system. The evaluations of these changes were performed with light, electron and fluorescence microscopy, with flow cytometry, and not only the cells were analyzed as the supernatant of the cultures with detection and quantification of released substances. The decimal potencies were not always “good”, but the centesimal powers, especially those highly diluted as 200c, proved to be not only effective but also different according to the product, ie, Aconitum 200c different from Belladona 200c.
